Registered nurses and… How will you reply to this class discussion?Registered nurses and licensed practical nurses are both members of the nursing team despite having different roles and responsibilities. There is a lot of similarities but also some distinctions in the standard of practice for RNs and LPNs. The standard of practice is the set of guidelines for providing high quality care and evaluating care. It set the level of performance of care that is acceptable for the profession. The standard is set in order to promote, guide and direct professionalism. It also establishes the roles and responsibilities expected of the members of the nursing team .and indicates the expectations that indicate competence. It provides the criteria for action and accountability. LPNs have different roles as that of RNs based on their education, skills and licensure. In comparison, they both provide direct patient care while aiming at positive patient outcomes, but RNs have more extended scope of practice. LPNs can give oral and topical medications, provide care, help in assessing the patient and reporting back to the RN, assist in creating care plans, implementing the care plans and observing and reporting changes to the RN. RNs have supervisory roles and thus have more responsibilities. The difference is that RNs unlike LPNs administer intravenous medications, can also diagnose, assess, create care plans, delegate task, perform diagnostic testing, counsel and coordinate treatments with physicians or other members of the care team. RNs can apply their critical thinking skills and make independent nursing decisions. Despite the roles an LPN or RN may have they must both maintain healthy environment, collaboration, communication, quality of practice, evidence-based practices, ethics, make use of resources, make use of self-evaluation, and continue to educate themselves. Understanding our roles of each member of the healthcare team promotes a civil and professional working environment and helps meet the best positive patient outcome and patient safety. When each member of the nursing team knows and understand what their roles and the roles of other members are, they work together as a team and provide the quality care that patients need, through effective communication, merging their observations, and expertise, leadership, situational awareness. It helps avoid any kind of confusion, misunderstanding confrontation and promotes ethical practices. Mutual support and respect for what each member does will produce the highest quality most efficient results for the patient. Having the understanding and respect for the role of every member of the nursing no matter the level of care they provide and maintaining professionalism creates a very civil work environment.
