Assignment #4
Robert Campbell, correspondent at The Boston Globe wrote about the newly built
Millennium Tower at downtown Washington street in his new article “On close inspection, the
Millennium Tower stands out”. A 685 feet tower feels like the tallest tree in a forest, anyone can
see this tower from a far distance. But the most impressive fact about this tower is that if a person
moves toward this tower it’ll disappear until that person look carefully and crane his neck. This
third tallest building in city has 60 stories, first five are for retail and from sixth floor it has 442
condos. Median price for a two-bed room unit at Millie is $1.92 million without interior, owner of
Condos has to renovate interior themselves. Finally, Campbell wrote about the future of
Millennium Tower by, who will live in this tower, people from local areas? People from other
continents or anyone else? People who will live in this tower either love the city of they want to
isolate themselves from the city. These days, United States is under a tower craze, let’s see what
progress Millie will make. (Campbell, 2016)
Beth Dunlop of The Miami Herald in his 2013 article “Designs for Miami Beach
Convention Center are sleek, smart – but flawed” wrote about the new convention center at the
beach of Miami. According to here analysis, a $1.1 billion budget for convention center with
legendry teams of architects and designers is a big deal for people of Miami. Dutch architect Rem
Koolhaas and his firm OMA designed the building with a link to rest of the city. Danish architect
Bjarke Ingels closely observed neighborhood of building and draw sharp details so that this
building must intermix with the environment of beach. Both proposals ae good and with
accordance of sleek, smart American design. It is a billion-plus dollar project, decision will rest on
such factors as money, operations, construction timing, and disaster management. In end Dunlop
criticize both designs for their signal building approach and suggests that they must seek a new
technology to allow more light an air to center. She further wrote that the building is a public
property, government must consider the public opinion about design before finalizing it. (Dunlop,
2013)
Difference between the articles of these two critics was visible, one wrote the article on a
completed building and current aspects of building, on the other hand Beth Dunlop provides a look
into the future of an architecture. Robert Campbell clarify everything about the architecture in
simple words. Beth Dunlop wrote everything on possibility. So, readability, writing style and
clarification of article was better in Campbell’s article as compare to Beth’s article.
