Two assessments that would positively contribute to the literacy environment in the
classroom, as well as a rationale for using those assessments.
One of the assessments that would positively contribute to the literacy environment in the
classroom is end of chapter questions. In this case, students should be asked various questions
after completion of every chapter. The questions should actually be directly related to what has
been taught. This will ensure that there is proper syllabus coverage. Apart from that, the teacher
will be able to know the grey areas that need more effort on revision.
Besides that, the other form of assessment that may contribute to literacy environment in
the classroom is group discussions and presentations. Groups should be assigned to different
tasks to accomplish. In this regard, the assessor may decide to give each group a topic to cover
and present it in class. This kind of assessment will help in sinking of knowledge inculcated in
the students.
Two possible classroom arrangements where the design of the physical environment
optimizes students’ use of traditional print, digital, and online resources in reading and
writing instruction.
Having a computer lab section within the classroom will help in optimizing the students
use of digital resources. In this case, the students should be allowed to visit the lab during
specific predetermined hours. For instance, the students may be allowed to only access the
computer labs during their break time. Alternatively, the school may set aside given hours which
all students must attend the lab for their digital know how. Moreover, these computer labs should
have Wi-Fi-connectivity. With this in place, the students will be able to access online resources

that will be used in reading and writing. In addition, the administrators of the lab should ensure
that students access only sites that will help in building knowledge and not just any site.
On the other hand, apart from the digital and online resources, students should also have
a provision for access to traditional print such as books. In this case, the classroom should have a
mini-library section that comprises of shelves with books. The shelves should also have
academic articles that may be helpful to students in boosting their literacy.
Supportive social environments that are low risk and include choice, motivation, and
scaffolded support to optimize students’ opportunities for learning to read and write.
The school administration should have a playing ground in place. The field should have
structures that support various games such as football, volleyball, among others. The fields, for
them to be safe to the students, should be located far from the road. This will ensure that there
are no incidences of students being knocked by vehicles. Apart from that, the fields should also
be well fenced, with adequate security provided. This will help in ensuring that no intruders get
to the field to harm the students. Engaging students in recreation activities such as playing
various ball games will help in boosting their morale, and will at the same time, prevent them
from being book wormers.
Apart from that, the management should also build places of worship within the school.
This will help in spiritual nourishment of the students. In addition, the places of worship may
also help in boosting the reading and writing of students as there are some religious
denominations that incorporate both skills in them. For instance, Christians may learn how to
read the bible and write the lessons derived from the books or religion.

Suggestions for effective routines that support reading and writing instruction (e.g., time
allocation, transitions from one activity to another, discussions, and coordinating the
resources of time, space, and learners’ attention.).
Group discussions should be initiated inside and out of classroom. This will help in
promoting reading and writing instructions as the students will definitely put into practice
reading and writing on attending those sessions.
Time management is other element that may help in supporting reading and writing. In
this case, the administration should ensure that most of the time is allocated to syllabus coverage.
In addition, such authority should also ensure that there is a smooth transition of activities, that
is, they should set sufficient time for breaks and syllabus coverage.
Besides that, there should be proper coordination among teachers. The timetable should
be arranged in such a manner that each teacher is assigned sufficient time to handle the students.
To be precise, each teacher should be given equal timings for teaching. In other word, each
lesson should be allocated the same time on the time table. For instance, if one lesson takes 40
minutes, then the same should apply to all others.
Use of multiple literacies.
There are various literacies that should be incorporated in syllabus coverage. One of these
is textual literacy. This form of literacy is applicable in reading of books. In addition, textual
literacy can also be attained through writing especially in written assessments and note taking by
the students. Textual literacy plays a significant role in boosting knowledge on written
instructions.

There is also the digital literacy. This will be attained through the use of computers in the
classroom from the computer lab. Internet connectivity will play a significant role in this. In the
course of pursuing digital literacy, one is able to sharpen his or her reading and writing skills.
Grouping practices that utilize a variety of classroom configurations (i.e., whole class, small
group, and individual) to differentiate instruction and promote literacy.
One of the practices is group discussions. When students are asked to work in groups,
they may be expected to change their sitting arrangements from the normal class room
arrangements. The new arrangement may be in form of small circles.
Apart from that, presentations is the other practice that can help in differentiating
instructions and promote literacy. In this case, one student may be assigned to teach other
students or rather deliver the prepared content. In most cases, this takes the form of power point
presentations.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the classroom teacher should be able to understand the areas of strengths
and weaknesses of all the students. For instance, a student may be strong in computing and weak
in academics. Given this as one of the possible cases, the teacher should embrace the areas of
strengths and focus on improving the areas of weaknesses.
