Living with people with disabilities and the less fortunate in society
My heartfelt feelings for people living with disabilities and the less fortunate in
society earned me the right name in the community. Amongst my friends and visitors
who came as donors in my home, I was referred to as a hero of many. As a determined
student with growth and careering mindset, I value the personalities of people with
disabilities and fight hard for them to gain a positive identity in the society. They seem
to be neglected by many, and they are denied equal opportunities even in economic
activities. I work hard to show them God’s love and those around us. The urge to
serve as a volunteer in my community has led me through different directions to
understand the essential things the disabled people need from the community.
I think my caretaking attitude is from my mom because we were brought up with a
boy who probably was picked from the streets. The case has been that he lacked basic
needs; mum found courage in her heart and admitted him to our home. We went to the
same schools, given equal attention, and mum was present for us at all times equally. It
was difficult to tell that I had a side brother.
When I am not in school, I spend much time at home, where I was given a yard by
dad, with the disabled people diving them courage in life. I always bring to their
attention that they are not lesser children in front of God just because of their
disabilities. At times, we read the bible together as we encourage each other spiritually.
To demonstrate charity and care, I often visit political offices from my local area to
meet our leaders. I advocate for the rights of the disabled people because they seem to
be forgotten by law. I remind them of the people with disability acts that are responsible
for the welfare of the disabled as well as their education.
In other instances, we manage to walk outside and offer charity works to the
community, such as cleaning the roads and collecting garbage. My aim with such an
activity is to demonstrate that the disabled care about the environment and the society
at large. Thus, society should reciprocate the same to the disabled. Further to note, I
advocate for employment opportunities for the disabled. Today, I am glad to see that
some of the disabled people whom I supported have a voice in society because they
have a decent income.
Living a life with the disabled goes beyond advocacy for education, equal rights,
and relationships. It engages taking up personal time and investment to support them
medically. We go to the health care centers around to get doctors’ prescriptions and
further treatment if required. While at home, I engage in therapeutic activities to
improve the patients’ health, instead of frequent visits to the hospitals.
I am lucky that I gain little support from friends, local governments, and good
wishers who grant me monetary support in meeting my daily expenses, both as a
caregiver and as a student. I am eager to make other peers learn the same and show their
responsibility to the community, other than attending school and going outside to offer
assistance.
I further encourage them to adopt other means of helping the community
by identifying niches where the need is urgently required, such as taking care of
orphans, accommodating street children, or giving free career talks to schools and other
social amenities that are deficient.
