1. Define wastewater and provide an example of where wastewater originates in your
community?
Water waste as defined by is defined as” water that has been used in flushing,
manufacturing, washing etc”. (dictionary.com 2019) in my community I would say that
waterwaste comes from landscaping without timers causing excessive watering. Also,
the waste of water broken irrigation around the neighborhood.

Water quality I selected to learn further about is dissolved Oxygen (DO). According to
the water science school it is defined as the amount of oxygen available to living
organisms most likely in a stream or lake. (USGS, n.d). DO is measure with an electronic
probe which sensors provide continuous measurements of quality water for organisms
and is dependent on temperature in the lake. Other methods can be used such as
chemical techniques collecting samples from the bodies of water ensuring that it does not
come into contact with air. Then placing looking for the chemical reaction to determine
quality.

I used two sites to check my area. The one that was provided above in the question gave
information from 2010. I found it difficult to navigate for current information and I
believe it stated that there was pollution found in the bodies of water in that time frame. I
then turned to looking at the water-sewer control plant for my area. I found that
Sunnyvale has a clean water program to which was originally create in 1956 an was
upgraded in 2014. It gives alternate links to talk more about the renewing of the plant and
keep customers updated on projects and facts about the wastewater facts.
4. Lastly, describe the treatment process used to clean wastewater in order for it to be
allowed back into the water cycle or reused. What is one way to now reuse nonpotable wastewater?
The plant uses an average of 0.8 million gallons of recycled water per day for its
customers under the “recycle Water Program. It is a three-step treatment facility that
remove the pollutants from wastewater to make it clean enough to safely discharge into
San Francisco bay or recycled for non-potable uses. The recycled water is pushed through
underground piping and used for irrigation, landscaping, toilets. There is a lot of great
information on this site and it made me more comfortable to know the steps taken to
ensure quality of water.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), waste water is basically used
water (USGS, 2019). I live in Virginia Beach, Virginia and wastewater comes from residential
community, businesses, farm lands and military.
Turbidity is a measurement of how clear a liquid is and its measure of unit is measured in
Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU) (Swanson, and Baldwin (1965)). Turbidity levels are
measured by a devices that is a long rod with a turbidity sensor on the end of it. This sensor test
light refraction, conductivity and temperature of the water.
I live in Virginia Beach and my local wastewater treatment is handled and processed in 3 phases
and then checked by a laboratory before it is discharged (HSRD 2019). What is amazing is this
plant along with two other local plants, treat a combined capacity of 249 millions gallons of
wastewater per day. For water conservation, the Virginia Beach government post tips on how to
conserve water both indoors and outdoors. Things such as taking shorter showers or replacing
your toilet or water heater with newer water conscious equipment (VBGOV 2019).
The wastewater is treated in three phases. The first phase is the sedimentation phase, where
wastewater is initially collection in a tank to and allowed to stay until all heavy debris falls to the
bottom. Secondary is running the water through natural means which I call the sludge process.
They allow human and animal waste becomes sludge and microorganisms eat away are organic
waste. The third phase is to remove any chemicals and toxic substances. Then finally a
laboratory test the waste water for high levels of waste before it is released into the ocean to let
nature do the rest (VBGOV 2109).
